Southern Black Widow Spider

Latrodectus mactans (Fabricius)

This is the ever famous Black Widow Spider; her bite is by far the most severe. This spider is native to Florida. The females are the dangerous ones with venom capable of causing severe illness; even death. Their bite is extremely poisonous and painful and come with unpleasant physical symptoms, they feed on insects but will also eat small rodents; their web is strong enough to catch mice; if bitten seek medical attention immediately.

Collect the spider if possible for identification. Your physician may administer an anti-venom treatment and calcium gluconate to alleviate pain, and will probably treat the site with an antiseptic to prevent infection.


If you have a heart condition or are otherwise vulnerable, you may require a hospital stay until symptoms subside. Usually bite victims recover fully within two to five days.
