Fire Ants - Red
Solenopsis invicta
Named for their ability to inflict pain, This is often referred to as a bite however the reality is that the pain is from the sting; Unlike many other ants, which bite and then spray acid on the wound, Fire Ants bite only to get a grip and then sting injecting a toxin. For humans, this is a painful sting, a sensation similar to what one feels when burned by fire (hence the name).
A typical fire ant colony builds large mounds in open areas, and feeds mostly on young plants and sometimes crickets. Fire ants often attack small animals and can kill them. Fire ants are more aggressive than most native species and will sting humans who disturb a nest. Although these fire ants are often found outdoors, they can gain access to buildings through HVAC systems.
